Frequently Asked Questions

As coaches, we want to make sure you get the right information about the sport of wrestling and our program. Below are some frequent questions or concerns expressed by new wrestling parents.  If you don't see your question below, you can also send us a message by CONTACTING US.
  • Will my child need to cut weight?
Weight management is something only recommended at the middle school or high school level, depending on the level of competition you are competing at. Even then, very strict weight management rules are enforced in order to ensure health safety for the wrestlers competing. However, we do use the season to talk about healthy nutritional habits that can lead to feeling better when competing.
  • Should I be worried about my child getting a skin fungus?
In short, no. The mats are cleaned with a disinfectant daily and anti-fungal foam is available in the room. We also recommend your child takes a shower immediately after practice. When taking these measures, contracting ringworm and other skin fungi is rare.
  • How do I prevent my kid from getting cauliflower ear?
Cauliflower Ear is formed when cartilage in the ear breaks. This is usually only caused when the ears take repeated physical pressure and friction. This usually doesn't occur until wrestlers become more intense with their training at the upper levels. It can be common among wrestlers, boxers, and MMA fighters. However, wearing a wrestling headgear during practice and competition is a very simple and highly effective way to prevent this.
  • How do I find other youth tournaments for my kid to compete in?
Coaches will keep the GameChanger app updated with local tournaments when the information becomes available. However, you can find a list of tournaments all over the state at https://iawrestle.com/youth-tournaments/ Here is a video to help if needed.
  • Will my child have to compete in tournaments?
That depends on the level of experience of your wrestler. We recommend learning the fundamental movements before competing. But if your wrestler expresses interest in competing at tournaments, then we will support them in their goals.
  • What does my child need for practice?
He or she will need a clean t-shirt and shorts. Clean clothes are preferred as to not make the mats dirty. Also, if your child plans to compete in tournaments, a pair of wrestling shoes are recommended. Please NO STREET SHOES on the wrestling mat. If your daughter has longer hair, it is recommended they have it in a ponytail or secured up and now earrings during practice.
  • What do the coaches use to keep us updated with information?
We use the GameChanger app. This app will include the practice and tournament schedule as well as all communication. Follow these links to download... iPhone app Android app Once you have the app downloaded, watch the video below to see how to find our team.
